Treatment for anemia should be determined based on effectiveness and the least amount of risk. Therefore, physicians should consider all available options before resorting to blood transfusions. While transfusions can be beneficial in certain circumstances, they do carry added risk and alternatives do exist. Instead of physicians focusing on whether or not they should transfuse restrictively or liberally, they should explore the underlying cause of the anemia and target the patientís treatment accordingly. When the proper precautions are taken and alternative approaches are utilized, patientsí anemia can be managed without contributing to the overuse of blood products.
